I manage the account of one of the top retailers and look after all the McVitie’s products that they sell.

My career so far…
I worked for Deloitte Touche, the accountacy firm for 18 months on an ACA training contract before joining United Biscuits in 1999. I started as a Retail Sales Executive working in the Manchester area with a portfolio of 200 plus independant customers.

What does your job involve in a typical day?
I work on a top retailer’s account and this is a very demanding role due to the responsibility of a multi-million pound account. I deal with anything from the pricing of products, developing new promotions to ensuring that our products arrive on time and in full through our supply chain… and so on across all McVitie’s products.

What do you like most about your job?
I have been allowed and encouraged to further develop myself in numerous areas and have also been able to go on the UB Accelerated Development Programme. To say that every day is different would be an understatement as I have experienced so much diversity and variety within my role. The only problem is that there is not enough time in the day!

What skills are required in your job?

What is your advice to people looking for a career in the food and grocery industry? 
Understand the roles available and therefore the different functions of a business. Decide where your skills lie and what you enjoy doing most and then try to find a career that best suits you, rather than one that your friends thinks sounds good.
